Len,
Yes I do think we struggle because of the speaker’s lack of attentiveness and maybe the way a speaker chooses what to speak on…I don’t like speakers at my worship gathering that feel like motivational speakers. While encouragement is one aspect of ‘preaching’ I think for the speaking time to be formative as Brian suggests requires attentiveness on both sides.

I was at that same gathering in Eagle, Idaho…

Ok, I finished reading your summary.. I wasn’t very attentive, taking this moment in the middle of working on a long paper…

Could it be that one reason we struggle with attentiveness to the speaker at our gatherings is that too many speakers have not first been attentive themselves? And so the word is stillborn.. Its a huge problem.. I know it in my own practice, and I see it in others. Too many distractions. Augustine wrote that the essence of sin is dissipation..

I just finished Part I and feel a little let down. But then, I’ve been on this road a while. You’re right that it’s a great introduction for those unfamiliar with the territory. I’m looking fwd to Part II.

Incidentally, I think it was Gordon Cosby back in the 60s that made a distinction between “selfing” practices and “othering” practices. The Cosbys and the Church of the Savior were “emerging” before the word was invented, forming essentially a missional order and a rule of life with a covenant structure.
